Invited for a two week residency at Alfred in the context a visiting artist program titled "Light and Shadow", I was given the use of the student gallery to create an installation. The title of the installation cites Alfred's school motto, Fiat Lux, and is an homage to the Brazilian artist Hélio Oiticica, whose last work before his death in 1980 was titled: "Maquette for Penetrable - Invention of Light". In the student gallery, eight projecting theater light fixtures equipped with stencils and colored gels were mounted along the walls, projecting onto the floor and walls of the space. After the lights were installed the space was open to students, who interacted with the light and the space in various ways. I documented the interaction, and chose four of the resulting images for reproduction. The images were printed on silkscreen paper with an ink-jet printer, and then incorporated into the installation. A reception was scheduled for the last day of my stay. To attend the reception, I asked all visitors to bring a gift. The gifts were collected on a shelf placed in the gallery for that purpose. |
