"You need to bring a gift to attend this exhibition"

work in progress

Tough Gallery, Chicago

September 1998

Using light projections in the gallery space, I wanted to create a background, an architectural lining, an indication of a space of potential. Posters, printed in blocks and mounted on boards were placed on easels. They announced the title of the show next to text excerpts from a song by Caetano Veloso ("Nine Out of Ten") superimposed over images taken at my previous show, "Fiat Lux-for Hélio from Adelight".

Visitors were asked to bring gifts. A festively decorated shelf was provided to store and display them. I invited musicians to perform at the opening reception, and artists to create temporary installations in the space during the run of the show.

I photographed events in the gallery, printed the photos on watercolor paper using an inkjet printer, and introduced them into the space as they got ready. A group of second hand t-shirts sporting corporate logos and various pop culture images were embroidered in silver thread with the word IMMERSION and offered for sale on a circular store rack in the foyer. Video documentation of the show exists.
